Woe to Hypocrites

1Pe 5:8-9, "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world." Scripture tells us: 1Th 5:21, "Prove all things. Hold fast to that which is good." We as truth seekers should be: 2Co 10:5, "Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ." 1Jn 4:1, "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world."

The following information is from the 347 CE Council of Ladodecia, a Roman Canon that is still being followed by Catholic Churches and protesting Catholic (Protestant) Churches today: Canon XXIX. " 'Christians' [sic] must not judaize by resting on the Sabbath, but must work on that day, rather honouring the 'Lord's Day' [sic]; and if they can, resting then as 'Christians' [sic]. But if any shall be found to be judaizers, let them be anathema from Christ." Summary of Canon XXIX: A 'Christian' [sic] shall not stop work on the Sabbath, but on the 'Lord's Day.' [sic]. Theodore Balsamon comments: Here the 'Fathers' [sic] order that no one of the faithful shall stop work on the Sabbath as do the Jews, but that they should honour the 'Lord's Day' [sic] on account of the Lord's resurrection, and that on that day they should abstain from manual labour and go to church. But thus abstaining from work on Sunday they do not lay down as a necessity, but they add, "if they can." For if through need or any other necessity and one worked on the 'Lord's day' [sic] this was not reckoned against him. In this Canon XXIX, the Catholic Church is essentially cursing (anathema) anyone who rests on the Sabbath." Note words with smaller quotes (') and followed by [sic] are words violating scripture. Also note: Jesus did NOT rise on a Sunday!<LINK. Mat 12:8, "For the Son of man {Jesus} is Lord even of the Sabbath day."

Wrong thoughts, in our minds, causes us to have a defiled speech and wrong actions, thus displeasing our Creator: Mat 15:10-20, "Jesus called the crowd to Him and said, 'Listen and understand. 11 A man is not defiled by what enters his mouth, but by what comes out of it.' 12 Then the disciples came to Him and said, 'Are You aware that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?' 13 But Jesus replied, 'Every plant that My heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by its roots. 14 Disregard them! They are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.' 15 Peter said to Him, 'Explain this parable to us.' 16 'Do you still not understand?' Jesus asked. 17 'Do you not yet realize that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then is eliminated? 18 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a man. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, and slander. 20 These are what defile a man, but eating with unwashed hands does not defile him.' "

The Pharisees and scribes wanted Christ's disciples to follow traditions of the elders: Mat 15:1-9, "Then some Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2 'Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They do not wash their hands before they eat.' 3 Jesus replied, 'And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, "Honor your father and mother "and "Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death." 5 But you say that if anyone says to his father or mother, "Whatever you would have received from me is a gift devoted to God," 6 he need not honor his father or mother with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you: 8 "These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. 9 They worship Me in vain; they teach as doctrine the precepts of men." " There are many churches, who in vain, take the name of Christ but don't follow His teachings: Isa 4:1, "And in that day seven women {churches} shall take hold of one man {Christ}, saying, 'We will eat our own food {our own doctrine, thus rejecting the bread of life} and wear our own apparel {self righteousness}; Only let us be called by your name {'Christians'}, To take away our reproach.' " Luk 6:46, "But why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do the things which I say?" Mar 7:13, "Thus you nullify the word of God by the tradition you have handed down. And you do so in many such matters." Read more about hypocrites by choosing the LINK> Catholic Church Admits Saturday is the Sabbath.

The Pharisees and scribes made an outward "appearance" of following the law but inwardly they were disobedient hypocrites. The scribes showed lack of humility: Luk 20:45-47, "In the hearing of all the people, Jesus said to His disciples, 46 'Beware of the scribes. They like to walk around in long robes, and they love the greetings in the marketplaces, the chief seats in the synagogues, and the places of honor at banquets. 47 They defraud widows of their houses, and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will receive greater condemnation.' "

Will you have the humility to serve God?

Pharisee's pride and the tax collector's humility: Luk 18:9-14 "To some who trusted in their own righteousness and viewed others with contempt, He also told this parable: 10 'Two men went up to the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed, "God, I thank You that I am not like the other menswindlers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and pay tithes of all that I acquire."13 But the tax collector stood at a distance, unwilling even to lift up his eyes to heaven. Instead, he beat his breast and said, "God, have mercy on me, a sinner!" 14 I tell you, this man, rather than the Pharisee, went home justified. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.' "

The vain scribes and Pharisees knew the law, but did not obey it: Mat 23:1-10, "Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples: 2 'The scribes and Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. 3 So practice and observe everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. 4 They tie up heavy, burdensome loads and lay them on men's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them. 5 All their deeds are done for men to see. They broaden {widen} their phylacteries {forehead prayers written on parchment strips worn between the eyes} and lengthen their tassels. 6 They love the places of honor at banquets, the chief seats in the synagogues, 7 the greetings in the marketplaces, and the title of 'Rabbi' by which they are addressed. 8 But you are not to be called Rabbi, for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. 9 And do not call anyone on earth your Father, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. 10 Nor are you to be called Master, for you have one Master, the Christ."

Scribes and Pharisees' hypocrites main focus was the attainment of wealth: Mat 23:13-19, "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men's faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let in those who wish to enter. 15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You traverse land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are. 16 Woe to you, blind guides! You say, "If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath." 17 You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes it sacred? 18 And you say, "If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath." 19 You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes it sacred?"

The scribes and Pharisees were law abiding, only when it suited them: Mat 23:23 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You pay tithes of mint, dill, and cumin. But you have disregarded the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. 24 You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel. 25 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, so that the outside may become clean as well." We all need a clean heart.

The scribes and Pharisees would kill prophets too, as they are the sons of those who murdered the prophets: Mat 23:27-34, "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside, but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and every kind of impurity. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to be righteous, but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness. 29 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous. 30 And you say, "If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in shedding the blood of the prophets." 31 So you testify against yourselves that you are the sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Fill up, then, the measure of the sin of your fathers. 33 You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape the sentence of hell? 34 Because of this, I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and others you will flog in your synagogues and persecute in town after town."

Scripture pointed to Jesus as the Messiah; however Pharisees and Sadducees chose, in unbelief, to doubt and demand signs: Mat 16:1-4, "Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came and tested Jesus by asking Him to show them a sign from heaven. 2 But He replied, 'When evening comes, you say, "The weather will be fair, for the sky is red," 3 and in the morning, "Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast." You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but not the signs of the times. 4 A wicked and adulterous generation demands a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.' {<LINK} Then He left them and went away."

Pharisees try to entrap Jesus by asking Him about taxes and tithes: Mat 22:15-21, "Then the Pharisees went out and conspired to trap Jesus in His words. 16 They sent their disciples to Him along with the Herodians. 'Teacher,' they said, 'we know that You are honest and that You teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You seek favor from no one, because You pay no attention to external appearance. 17 So tell us what You think: Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?' 18 But Jesus knew their evil intent and said, 'You hypocrites, why are you testing Me? 19 Show Me the coin used for the tax.' And they brought Him a denarius. 20 'Whose image is this,' He asked, 'and whose inscription?' 21 'Caesar's,' they answered. So Jesus told them, 'Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's.' "

Hyprocrital Sadducees ask about the resurrection, but do not claim that there is a resurrection: Mat 22:23-30, "That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus and questioned Him. 24 'Teacher,' they said, 'Moses declared that if a man dies without having children, his brother is to marry the widow and raise up offspring for him. 25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died without having children. So he left his wife to his brother. 26 The same thing happened to the second and third brothers, down to the seventh. 27 And last of all, the woman died. 28 In the resurrection, then, whose wife will she be of the seven? For all of them were married to her.' 29 Jesus answered, 'You are mistaken because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. 30 In the resurrection, people will neither marry nor be given in marriage. Instead, they will be like the angels in heaven."

Love is Essential

Jesus taught that Love is Essential: Mat 22:34-38, "And when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they themselves gathered together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested Him with a question: 36 'Teacher, which commandment is the greatest in the Law?' 37 Jesus declared, ' "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: "Love your neighbor as yourself." ' "

The parable of the wedding feast tells us Christ is offering salvation, but people are refusing to repent: Mat 22:3, "He sent his servants to call those he had invited to the banquet, but they refused to come." Then a man came to the wedding feast in wrongful attire of unrighteousness: Mat 22:13-14, "Then the king told the servants, 'Tie him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' 14 For many are called, but few are chosen." Caution: Heb 13:5, "Do not allow the love of money to influence your behavior, but be satisfied with what you have; for He has said, 'In no way will I ever leave you; no—I will never forsake you in any way.' " Sad, but true, not all achieve salvation: Rev 22:12-15, "And behold, I am coming quickly; and My reward is with Me, to render to each one according as his work shall be. 13 I am Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last. 14 Blessed are those who keep His commandments, that they may have the right to eat of the tree of life, and may enter by the gates into the city. 15 But excluded are dogs, and sorcerers, and fornicators, and murderers, and idolaters, and everyone who loves and devises a lie." Luk 12:32, "Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom."
