God Tells Us to Teach Our Children

Children are a blessing to you from God.

Psalm 127:3-5 "Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them!..."

Psalm 113:9 "He gives the childless woman a family, making her a happy mother. Praise the Lord!"

Children and their innocence are very important to God.

Luke 18:15-17 "Now they were bringing even infants to Him that He might touch them. And when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. But Jesus called them to Him, saying, 'Let the children come to Me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.' "

Older parents must teach younger parents to properly teach the younger children.

Titus 2:4 "These older women must train the younger women to love their husbands and their children."

It is crucial that love and obedience towards God our Father and parents is taught and enforced by word and example.

Proverbs 22:6 "Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it."

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 "These words (Chapter 5, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS AND LOVE TOWARDS GOD) I am commanding you today must be kept in mind, and you must teach them to your children and speak of them as you sit in your house, as you walk along the road, as you lie down, and as you get up."

Ephesians 6:1-4 "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honor your father and mother' (this is the first commandment with a promise), 'that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.' Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord."

The Holy bible should be a required instruction book for all families.

2 Timothy 3:15-16 "You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right."

Discipline includes training and instruction and may include proper balanced physical attention to a child's posterior.

Proverbs 23:13-14 "Don't fail to correct your children. You won't kill them by being firm, and it may even save their lives."

Hebrews 12:11 "For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it."

Proverbs 29:15-17 "To discipline a child produces wisdom, but a mother is disgraced by an undisciplined child. When the wicked are in authority, sin flourishes, but the godly will live to see their downfall. Discipline your children, and they will give you peace of mind and will make your heart glad."

If you are not actively involved in your child's education; they will be ill-educated with false teachings such as evolution, vain philosophies, and other lies influenced by worldly dictates and powers.

Isaiah 3:12 "Though you are God's people, you are ruled and abused by women and children. You are confused by leaders who guide you down the wrong path."

Proper education must be based Biblical truth because children do not belong to any government authority or entity.

John 17:16-17 Jesus said, "They don't belong to this world, and neither do I. Your word (God's word) is the truth. So let this truth make them completely yours."

Proverbs 12:1 "The one who loves discipline loves knowledge, but the one who hates reproof is stupid."

Do not be ashamed of God's way of life and teach the truth.

Mark 8:38 "Don't be ashamed of me and my message among these unfaithful and sinful people! If you are, the Son of Man will be ashamed of you when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels."

1 Timothy 4:12 "Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity." (No matter how young, if a parent you may be).

Titus 2:6-7 "Encourage young men to use good judgment (self control). Always set an example by doing good things. When you teach, be an example of moral purity and dignity."

1 Peter 2:16 "Live as free people, but don't hide behind your freedom when you do evil. Instead, use your freedom to serve God."

1 Peter 2:12 "Live such good lives among the unconverted Gentiles (pagans) that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day He visits us."

Jesus set the example of love and service by His action and conduct and wants us and our children to model proper love and service towards others.

John 13:14-15 "If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, so that you should do for each other exactly as I have done to you."

Philippians 3:17 "Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do."

We are instructed to have proper goals; as well as provide for others who may be needy.

Matthew 6:3 "When you give to the poor, don't let anyone know about it."

Matthew 6:33 "But more than anything else, put God's work first and do what He wants. Then the other things will be yours as well."

Philippians 4:19 "And my God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus."

1 Timothy 5:8 "But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever."

2 Corinthians 12:14 "Here for the third time I am ready to come to you. And I will not be a burden, for I seek not what is yours but you. For children are not obligated to save up for their parents, but parents for their children." (Paul was father like to Corinth)

Proverbs 13:22 "If you obey God, you will have an inheritance to leave your grandchildren. If you don't obey God, those who live right will get what you leave."

We must be always have godly forgiveness of those who trespass against us.

Matthew 6:14-15 "If you forgive others for the wrongs they do to you, your Father in heaven will forgive you. But if you don't forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins."

Psalm 103:13 "As a father shows compassion to his children, so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear (to disobey) Him."

Titus 3:8 "This message is certainly true. These teachings are useful and helpful for everyone. I want you to insist that the people follow them, so that all who have faith in God will be sure to do good deeds."

Galatians 6:10 "So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith." (This includes our children).

Addendum


If you live a life of hypocrisy, you fail to correctly teach. Also divorce introduces additional challenges to living a life that models proper conduct and avoids corrupting a child's belief in God.

When raising godly kids, as parents, teachers, and elders we all need to use the Word of God. Don’t try to teach children without it, that will only lead them to rebelliousness. God knows children and He knows what you need to do to bring them up right. Parents are either going to prepare their children to follow Christ or allow them to follow the world. A child will trust his parents and believe the awesome stories in the Bible. Have fun while reading Scripture to them. Make it exciting.

If parents model a proper example from the time they bring their newborn home, until they leave the family home. If you teach them properly, children will be fascinated by Jesus Christ. Love your kids and be careful to follow God’s instructions, which includes teaching them His Word, disciplining them out of love, not provoking them to anger, praying with them, and being a good example.

"God’s purpose is that the Holy Spirit should take possession of our sons and daughters for His service; that they should be filled with the Holy Spirit, consecrated for service. They belong to God and He to them."

You teach them by how you conduct yourself. Be a good role model and don’t cause them to stumble.

1 Corinthians 8:9 "But you must see to it that this right of yours does not become a stumbling block for those who are weak."

What about outside interference, divorce when one parent has more custody and time with children. If an unbeliever, who departs, gets custody of the children. It is still the God given right of the believing parent to model and teach their children; when they have them as much as they can about God and His word and to model it in their behavior.

One thing we know is that God also warns adults against harming children:

Mark 9:42 "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea."

Often the primary custody parent, if they are not a believer, entices and encourages the children to embrace secular beliefs and customs of the ungodly world. For the non or limited custody parent, who might be a believer, it is more challenging and it is even more important to model behavior that is moral and Godly. If they don't obey and follow God, and they show an indifference to God and His laws, but "attempt to claim" to follow God, it causes the children to be confused and not trust either parent. In essence they are as much an orphan as a child who is an orphan.

The bible has examples of children who did know some of God's laws but strayed. The prodigal son is one huge example, there was Moses, who did know his biological mother and his siblings, but he grew up in the court of Egypt and was prince. Then he fled for his life. God did finally call him to lead the Israel people out of Egypt. Samson is another who sought women of another belief. His parents did not give up on him and although he suffered, he finally did do God's will. Even Joseph of the Bible was a bit arrogant and haughty. God had to first humble him before He could use him.

Acts 2:39 "For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call."

John 6:44 "No one can come to Me, unless the Father who sent Me makes them want to come. But if they do come, I will raise them to life on the last day."

Pray to God for your children to receive this promise!
