This is the definition according to https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/benevolent. For #Christians, and people in general.... Since this is a term people seem to love to toss around, let's go over the definitions: "desire to do good to others; goodwill; charitableness: to be filled with benevolence toward one's fellow creatures. an act of kindness; a charitable gift: She bequeathed many benevolence from her vast fortune. English History. a forced contribution to the sovereign." The desire to be seen as good, kind, charitable. " And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch." Acts 11:26. The Apostle Paul addresses believers as saints, brethren, and the faithful in Christ Jesus, but never Christians. Should not believers today be more properly called "believers" instead of "Christians" as so many denominations claim to be? In scripture after scripture in the New testament Christ calls us brothers, saints, friends, disciples, followers but never "Christians." He calls us faithful and children of God. "To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ who are in Colosse: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ." Colossians 1:2. "To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours." 1 Corinthians 1:2. |
God is Building His Temple |
God is calling people to build His temple. It is a spiritual temple, not a physical one, and His chosen are the church. They do not attend church but are an assembly gathered together on His Sabbath day as a body of true believers. God's written word is to teach and train and prepare His saints for the work of preaching to gospel to all the world. "To equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ." Ephesians 4:12 (ESV). "Now you are the body of Christ and you are all individually members." 1 Corinthians 12:27 "As for the saints (believers) in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight." Psalm 16:3. "For the Lord loves justice; He will not forsake His saints. They are preserved forever, but the children of the wicked shall be cut off." Psalm 37:28. "Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The brothers who are with me greet you." Philippians 4:21 (ESV). "Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints." Ephesians 6:18. "Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints, for those who fear Him have no lack!" Psalm 34:9. "Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and deacons." Philippians 1:1. "So that He may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all His saints." 1 Thessalonians 3:13. |
Saints Strive for Righteous Conduct |
"Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints." Jude 1:3 "But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints." Ephesians 5:3. "For He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why He is not ashamed to call them brothers." Hebrews 2:11. "Let me hear what God the LORD will speak, for He will speak peace to His people, to His saints; but let them not turn back to folly." Psalm 85:8. "They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us." 1 John 2:19. "And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." Hebrews 10:10. "There is one body and one Spiritjust as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all." Ephesians 4:4-6. "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose. For those whom He foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, in order that He might be the firstborn among many brothers." Romans 8:28-29. "The Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit itself intercedes for us with groaning too deep for words. And the One who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit itself intercedes for the saints according to the will of God." Romans 8:26-27. "Jesus and the people He makes holy all belong to the same family. That is why He isn't ashamed to call them His brothers and sisters." Heb 2:11. "Stay joined to me and let my teachings become part of you. Then you can pray for whatever you want, and your prayer will be answered. When you become fruitful disciples of mine, my Father will be honored. I have loved you, just as my Father has loved me. So remain faithful to my love for you. If you obey me, I will keep loving you, just as my Father keeps loving me, because I have obeyed him. I have told you this to make you as completely happy as I am. Now I tell you to love each other, as I have loved you. The greatest way to show love for friends is to die for them. And you are my friends, if you obey me." The saints are believers who follow Jesus, the true Shepard. "If you dwell in Me, and My words dwell in you, you shall ask whatever you desire, and it shall come to pass for you. In this is My Father glorified, that you bear much fruit; so shall you be My disciples. As the Father has loved Me, I also have loved you; live in My love. If you keep My commandments, you shall live in My love; just as I have kept My Father's commandments and live in His love. These things I have spoken to you, in order that My joy may dwell in you, and that your joy may be full. This is My commandment: that you love one another, as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this: that one lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends, if you do whatever I command you. No longer do I call you servants, because the servant does not know what his master is doing. But I have called you friends because I have made known to you all the things that I have heard from My Father. You yourselves did not choose Me, but I have personally chosen you, and ordained you, that you should go forth and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain; so that whatever you shall ask the Father in My name, He may give you. These things I command you, that you love one another." Joh 15:7-17. |
True saints Experience Hatred by the World |
True saints will experience the hatred of the world. "If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. However, because you are not of the world, but I have personally chosen you out of the world, the world hates you for this. Remember the word that I spoke to you: a servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you also. If they kept My word, they will keep your word also. But they will do all these things to you for My name's sake, because they do not know Him Who sent Me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have had sin; but now they have nothing to cover their sin. The one who hates Me hates My Father also. If I had not done among them the works that no other man has done, they would not have had sin; but now they have both seen and hated both Me and My Father. But this has happened so that the saying might be fulfilled which is written in their law, 'They hated Me without a cause.' But when the Comforter has come, which I will send to you from the Father, even the Spirit of the truth, which proceeds from the Father, that one shall bear witness of Me." Joh 15:18-26. |
